I really enjoy the camaraderie here at OAA and working with a superb group of physicians and staff. What do you like best about working for OAA? I also enjoy seeing them improve and hearing about how something I did for them made a positive impact on their life. I enjoy listening to their stories and getting to know them as people, not just as patients. What do you like best about working with your patients?

All of these can help in preventing the development of chronic painful conditions. While I employ a variety of options in treating my patients, I believe that people need to take an active role in their treatment and toward that end, I encourage smoking cessation, weight loss, and a healthy life style including regular exercise. I treat a variety of acute and chronic painful conditions such as neck pain, lower back pain, sciatica, disc herniations, spinal stenosis, spinal arthritis, spinal fractures, neuropathic (nerve) pain, and cancer pain. What are common conditions you treat? Is there anything patients can do to avoid developing their conditions? This is still what motivates me when I treat my patients today. At the time, I remember thinking that helping people suffering with pain had to be one of the most noble things a doctor could do. I was very impressed with seeing patients’ lives transformed when chronic painful conditions they had suffered with for years were suddenly alleviated. It wasn’t until my third year in medical school that I heard about pain management. When did you decide to specialize in pain management? As a young boy, I would often accompany my dad into the hospital to make rounds with him and occasionally observe some of his surgeries. Growing up, many of our conversations at the dinner table were (and still are) about medicine. My father is a general surgeon and my mother is a nurse. How did you become interested in medicine? His interest in current research brings cutting-edge treatments to the patients for whom he cares. In his practice since coming to the Lehigh valley, he has participated in numerous clinical trials of novel pain therapies as either a principle or sub-investigator. Wertz developed an interest in clinical research and won the prestigious Howard E. While a medical student at Hershey Medical Center, Dr. Wertz has the distinction of being an affiliate of Bluetail Medical Group – a nationally renowned leader in the practice and advancement of orthopaedic orthobiologic medicine. Wertz is one of the few physicians in the Lehigh Valley that offers Orthobiologic treatment options, including platelet rich plasma (PRP) therapy and cellular based therapy. These include: chronic and acute back pain, sciatica, neck pain, spinal fractures, neuropathic pain (nerve pain), cancer pain, and more.ĭr. In joining OAA, he brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience in treating patients with a variety of painful conditions, both acute and chronic. Wertz moved to the Lehigh valley in 1996 after completing his residency in Anesthesiology at the Pennsylvania State University and a fellowship in Pain Management at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. Wertz became interested in pain management after seeing how patients’ lives were transformed by alleviating them of the burden of chronic pain.ĭr. It wasn’t until medical school, however, that Dr. Wertz knew that he wanted to be a doctor at an early age while listening to his father, who is a general surgeon, talk about his work and accompanying him on rounds at the hospital.
